Little Frank is six and it’s his birthday. Dad, Grandpa and Great Grandpa (who are all called Frank!) give him a very special present. It’s a model boat, originally made by Great Grandpa Frank over sixty years ago and handed down to Grandpa, Dad and now little Frank. What a fantastic present! Frank can hardly wait to see it sail. But when he loses it in the stream how will he bring himself to tell the others?

A simple story linked to topics from National Curriculum Key Stage 1 with fantastic facts about toys from the past and a fun mix and match game.

Review of Bananas series from ‘Junior Bookshelf’:
‘ A delightful introduction to the pleasures of reading’.

The Four Franks owes a lot to my Dad who spent his entire working life sailing the sea in ships. He used to come home on leave with fantastic tales of life at sea and he also made us model sailing boats a bit like Frank’s boat.

The story is linked to some of the concepts explored in Keystage 1 History – how things change during the course of one person’s lifetime, and also the value of memorabilia and special objects to teach us things about the past. Franks’ boat has been made in World War II, mended by a farmer’s wife at the farm where Grandpa was evacuated as a small boy, and mended again on the day of the first moon landing - with wooden chopsticks from a new Chinese takeaway. The story is also about families and the special bonds between four generations. It’s about shared memories and shared projects – as well as a shared name!
