A five session course exploring ‘The
Beatitudes’ – which is one of the best
known but most baffling collections of the Jesus’ teachings – in
the New Testament of the Bible. (Matthew 5:3-10)
The course – which is co-written with Robert
Warren – is designed to be a Lent course for
groups of adults to study together but is suitable
for group or individual use at any time of the year – and
would work well with older youth groups too. Each
session includes introductory material, discussion
questions, prayers and ideas for multi-sensory activities
like art or watching movie clips.

‘Life
Attitudes does a wonderful job in opening up for Christians
of all traditions the liberating challenge of these words
of Jesus and offers us imaginative pointers to how we
can live out their message in our daily lives.’ Dr
Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury
‘Sometimes the Beatitudes can sound rather lofty.
Nothing could be further from the truth. In Life Attitudes
Jesus’ words touch our lives at ground level.’ Joel
Edwards, General Director, Evangelical Alliance

‘What makes us really happy?’ Ours is a
culture that values pleasure, fulfilment and the feel-good
factor to an unprecedented degree but which often looks
for these qualities in all the wrong places. The Beatitudes,
with their refrain of ‘Blessed are those…’ (or
as some translations put it ‘Happy are those…’)
address the most fundamental of questions – how
shall we live in order to thrive, rather than just survive?
The Beatitudes – or Beautiful Attitudes – challenge
us to examine what is really important to us and what – when
we strip away the hype – we truly want to be. Like
so many of Jesus’ takes on things, the Beatitudes
present us with a gloriously upside-down logic. We are
rich when we acknowledge just how poor we are; we discover
deep joy when we let ourselves feel pain; we feel good
when we do good to others; we are empowered when we have
the courage to relinquish control. In short, we are most
fully ourselves when we give ourselves away. It’s
radical and thrilling stuff.
So beware - Life Attitudes may change you! The course
is challenging – but how could it not be, given
the Biblical ‘nugget’ on which it is based?
