‘ Now I know how betrayal poisons things – how it’s like a deadly toxin trickling down, contaminating everything it touches…’

Isabel and Macy are the best of mates. What could ever come between them? Then Isabel meets Duncan. He’s kind, funny and not bad-looking – she knows he’d never hurt her. When they all get together in Edinburgh, it’s going to brilliant. It’s going to be the perfect summer…

PoisonedIsabel Bright has finally got it together with Duncan, her cyber-space friend from Scotland. Things are going pretty well despite the fact that they live so far apart. But Isabel is talented and ambitious and playing ‘Medea’ in London and at the Edinburgh fringe is a great opportunity… When Duncan comes to visit, Isabel is so busy with play rehearsals that she doesn’t see as much of Duncan as she might. Best friend Macy feels a little sorry for him. Duncan’s a laugh, and he and Macy have a lot in common. After all, he is her best friend’s boyfriend so of course they get along - what’s the problem? Except things go a little further than they should…

Can Isabel forgive and forget? How can a broken friendship be repaired? Can poisoned things ever be made good again?

…’like its characters, Poisoned has depths underneath the surface sheen and this makes for a satisfying and enjoyable read.’ Books for Keeps

‘…all three characters were very vividly described and readers of Voices would relish this sequel.’ Reviews: Twelve to Sixteen

I liked the characters in Voices so much that I wanted to write about them again, so I wrote a sequel. Voices ends with Isabel and Duncan meeting properly for the first time after months of letters and e-mails and there’s such a spark between them that I wanted to find out how things developed!

I was also interested in Isabel’s friendship with Macy. How enduring was it? What would put it to the test? What happens to the dynamics of a friendship when one of the friends starts going out with someone? And what happens if the other friend finds herself fancying that person too?

Voices explores the idea of forgiveness – a key theme in Shakespeare’s The Tempest. How can you forgive someone who hurts you? And what happens if you don’t? In Poisoned, Performing Arts students Isabel and Macy travel to London and Edinburgh, acting in an ancient Greek play called Medea. This is a dark and bitter play about betrayal and poisoning – a play in which forgiveness is rejected in favour of revenge.
Isabel has a choice – should she forgive Macy and Duncan or not? The choice is yours!
